Torsten Kulke, Vice President Global Innovation Fragrance & Oral Care at Symrise

Symrise has opened a catalysis laboratory to advance its strategic research focus in green chemistry. The company will investigate the synthesis of new molecules via catalysis, develop chemical processes and optimize existing processes for aroma molecules with less environmental impact.

The new laboratory, dedicated to the synthesis and catalysis of new molecules, will broaden the capacities of Symrise Scent & Care in green chemistry.

Catalysis is a key technology for the design of environmentally benign processes with reduced energy consumption and waste production. In the laboratory, catalyst experts will develop chemical processes and optimize existing processes for aroma molecules,” says Symrise.

For this purpose, the laboratory will be equipped with specially manufactured catalyst testing units, enabling catalyst screening, long-term stability tests and process-optimization studies. In addition, the laboratory will receive equipment for the preparation and modification of heterogeneous catalysts to build up a catalyst library and expertise.

The opening of our catalysis lab underpins our commitment towards sustainability and innovation. Within the new facilities, we will deploy green chemistry principles to minimize resource utilization. We will extend our innovation horizon through growing our know-how in state-of-the art process development,” says Torsten Kulke, Vice President Global Innovation Fragrance & Oral Care at Symrise.

Symrise also announced they have been certified “Green Company” by DQS, a leading certifier of company processes. DQS defines a “Green Company” as a company that sets itself apart from its competitors in terms of products, services and environmental standards by minimizing its impact on the environment.

Symrise has successfully passed the audit. It now holds the Green Company certification mark for a year.

Employees, customers and suppliers are working together to shape and improve sustainable processes. In doing so they are playing a key role in adding value. The seal is based on established standards and transparent, comprehensible criteria. We are thus boosting our position as a reliable business partner,” explains Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Bertram, CEO of Symrise.
