The 8th edition of the CosmeTokyo trade show was held from 20th to 22nd of January 2020. It was the biggest show so far for Japan’s largest cosmetics trade fair, held at Makuhari Messe, near Chiba.

Surfing on the J-Beauty, the organizers of the three-day show announced almost 900 exhibitors from 35 countries and, 28,669 visitors this year. The show was held at the same time and under the same roof than two other events: Cosme Tech Tokyo, dedicated to the development of cosmetic products and gathering packaging and ingredients suppliers, and Inner Beauty Tokyo, dedicated to beauty and health foods. The three events form the Cosme Week Tokyo, concomitant to the Life Style Week which features eight specialized trade fairs focusing on gifts, baby and kid products, stationary, homeware and fashion. This unrivalled conjunction of events helped to attract a large number of visitors.

Made in Japan

Visitors were able to experience the “made in Japan” with masks (stickers or sheet masks) made of or with graphene, cider or micro-needles, and also wash-off slime masks. Rose, fermented rice and again “placenta” were some of the key ingredients for Japanese beauty. Other beauty ingredients included bamboo, honey, silk cocoon or seaweed.

Electronic beauty was present with devices delivering oxygen, ozone, specific light colours for beauty and wellness effect, or medical devices claiming to heal wound with a specific associated cream. We also found skin diagnostics devices or applications (for smartphones).

Brushes were again a key feature of the show, revealing the Japanese craftmanship in creatives shapes and colours.

The haircare section was offering the usual dark hair spray (for thinning hair), or brush for scalp treatment, hair tonic solutions, etc.

Natural and Inner Beauty

Inner beauty is gaining momentum in the beauty industry, and after having opened this topic with a specific area at the show 2 years ago, we are now able to build more bridges between inner and outer beauty. Again in this category “placenta” was a key ingredient but also rose with rose water or water sprays for instance. We also found oil capsules with no skin or seaweed capsules.

On the natural side local olive oils or locally made soaps where highlighted this year, but also organic herbs, vegetable essence for instance.

Osaka in September 2020

The show will now open for the first year in Osaka, from 9th to 11th of September, at INTEX exhibition centre. The show is also targeting suppliers, manufacturers and brands of beauty product. The show will offer products for: skincare, colour cosmetics, natural/organic products, hair/body care, fragrance and beauty and health foods.

The west of Japan represents over 60% of the spend of cosmetics in Japan and Osaka is the largest city in the region.
