The biotech company, which designs, develops and produces sustainable ingredients for the clean health, beauty and flavors and fragrances markets has entered into an agreement to acquire Costa Brazil, a New York headquartered clean luxury beauty and wellness brand taking inspiration from the Amazon biodiversity.

Costa Brazil is joining Amyris’ growing portfolio of consumer brands, which already includes Biossance, a clean skincare and beauty brand based on 100% plant-based squalene, Pipette, a clean baby care brand which was launched last year, Rose Inc., a clean beauty brand created in partnership with model and makeup artist Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, JVN, a clean hairline brand created with hairdresser and television personality Jonathan Van Ness, and Terasana, a CBD based natural skincare brand.

Amyris plans to leverage its science platform and fermentation technology to develop and scale Costa Brazil products.

Co-founded by Francisco Costa and Michele Levy, Costa Brazil takes inspiration from the rich, natural essence of Brazil, Mr. Costa’s home country. “All products are made from ingredients sustainably sourced from the Amazon, and activated using the latest technologies,” said Amyris in a statement.

By sourcing Costa Brazil ingredients from the Amazon in a sustainable way and applying the science of biotechnology, Amyris will continue to support the local communities where these ingredients are found.

"My vision for Costa Brazil has always been to create a brand where beauty is inseparable from the health of the earth," commented Francisco. Costa. "Amyris will be able to help execute this vision through its innovative science and research."

With the acquisition of Costa Brazil, Amyris will appoint Francisco Costa as Chief Creative Officer of the company.

Financial details of the transactions have not been disclosed. A definitive agreement is expected to be signed by the end of March and, subject to customary closing conditions, the transaction is expected to close at that same time.
