Salisbury District Hospital has become the first NHS hospital in Great Britain to create a moisturising cream to sell commercially, with all profits to be re-invested back into patient care.

The sunflower oil (5%) based product, which was officially launched in April, was created some 20 years ago by the hospital’s pharmacists and scientists as a moisturising cream for plastic surgery and burns patients and has proved so popular with patients that the decision was taken to sell it to a wider public.

“My Trusty Little Sunflower Cream” is based on the original product and now comes in two variants, unscented or with lavender essential oil, both of them being paraben-free. The product costs £6.99 (about 8.10 euro) for 100ml and is available at www.sunflowercream.com, or telephone ordering and can be purchased from retail outlets within the Hospital.

A first batch of 20 thousand tubes has been produced. British packaging supplier M&H manufactured the 35mm diameter flexible tubes which are topped off with a fliptop cap and Flexo printed the tube in-house.
