Based on the extract of the leaves of Ziziphus spina-christi, a very common evergreen in Levant countries as wells as some Mediterranean countries, also known as Christ’s thorn jujube, GlowAGE [1] prevents and reduces glycation in the skin for a “rejuvenated and radiant appearance”.

An iconic tree in the Middle East

Extracts were made from leaves of wild-growing plants of the thorny evergreen shrub, renowned to be very tolerant to high temperatures and for its ability to grow in arid regions where dry seasons can last up to 10 months.

Cultivated in northern Africa, throughout the Middle East, and in northern India, Ziziphus spina-christi can also grow into a tree measuring up to 20 m in height. Traditionally, the leaves were used throughout history as herbal remedies against wounds, skin infections, insomnia, and diabetes.

In addition to the historic uses, modern medicine confirmed antibacterial, antioxidative and, interestingly, also antidiabetic properties of Ziziphus spina-christi leaves.

Glycation prevention

As glycation, and the resulting “advanced glycation end products” (AGEs), contribute to collagen stiffening, loss of elasticity, inflammation, and a sallow appearance of the skin, preventing this process is an interesting way to enhance the appearance of the skin.

In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that GlowAGE prevents the formation of AGEs and activates the machinery for the removal of AGEs.

According to Mibelle Biochemistry, GlowAGE further reduces the expression of the AGE receptor that drives glycation-induced inflammation, the appearance of wrinkles and the AGE formation and collagen fragmentation in the skin.

By preventing and even reversing glycation, the new ingredient therefore helps to decrease yellow skin tone, reduce wrinkles and smooth the skin.
