With Alter-Thickhair [1], Lessonia introduces a new generation of fibers for hair thickening applications. Derived from a co-product of perfume manufacturing, this new 100% natural and vegan ingredient offers an innovative and sustainable alternative to the fibers — whether synthetic (nylon), plant-based (cotton), or animal-derived (keratin).

Exceptional raw material and optimal binding

Alter-Thickhair is derived from Oud wood residues left after essential oil distillation for perfumery purposes. Lessonia gives these by-products a second life through a grinding and micronization process performed at its Saint-Thonan facility in Brittany, France.

Owing to their unique composition, Oud wood fibers naturally cling to the hair through gentle electrostatic attraction. When ground, they gain a positive charge via the triboelectric effect, allowing them to bond seamlessly with negatively charged hair. This ensures uniform, long-lasting deposition without residue or transfer on clothes. Lessonia reports an immediate thickening effect with a natural appearance and a light, soft, non-sticky feel.

Alter-Thickhair gives a second life to a precious raw material from the world of perfumery. It’s an innovation that unites sustainability and visible results. The effect is striking from the very first use,” says Marion Lagadec, Marketing Manager at Lessonia.

Custom formulas

Currently available in two standard shades — Natural and Brown — Alter-Thickhair can be custom-colored to meet the specific needs of formulators and brands, ensuring compatibility with various hair tones.

According to Lessonia, this new ingredient can be seamlessly incorporated into a wide variety of formulations and galenic forms, including hair densifying powders and leave-on scalp treatments aimed at improving capillary density. “Stable and non-agglomerating, Alter-Thickhair fibers retain their adhesion properties, natural appearance, and sensory performance throughout the formulation and application process,” the manufacturer reports.

Current expectations

Numerous factors — including stress, hormonal changes, diet, and heredity — can accelerate hair aging and contribute to thinning and hair loss, amplifying density concerns. As a result, demand for solutions that restore volume and body to the hair continues to grow, alongside a clear shift toward natural, sustainable, and vegan alternatives.

Uniting performance with sustainability, Alter-Thickhair represents the next generation of hair care — a natural, responsible alternative for contemporary hair thickening formulations,” claims Lessonia.
