As of October 1, L’Occitane en Provence has introduced its Cédrat Perfumed Shower Gel in a bottle made entirely from recycled PET, thanks to Carbios’ pioneering enzymatic recycling technology.
This innovation marks a key step in the relaunch of the brand’s scented collections, building on the success of a 2024 pilot using the same technology for the Almond Shower Oil bottle.
Carbios’ enzymatic recycling process breaks down all types of PET waste into their basic monomers, which can then be repolymerized to create new PET with properties identical to those of virgin plastic.
The resulting recycled PET retains full transparency and shine — qualities often lost in mechanically recycled PET, which can take on a grayish hue. Carbios’ technology also broadens the recycling scope to include previously challenging materials such as colored bottles and multi-layer packaging.
Finally, the use of bio-recycled PET produced using this method reduces CO2 emissions by 92% compared to the production of virgin PET from fossil resources [1].
This launch will be followed by the gradual integration of this material into other transparent bottles used by the brand.
L’Occitane en Provence has set itself the goal of achieving 100% recycled PET bottles by 2028, thereby eliminating the use of virgin plastic from fossil resources.
"The integration of Carbios’ biorecycled PET into our Cédrat bottle marks the acceleration of our circularity strategy. Following the success of a first reference in 2024, we are demonstrating our ability to roll out this innovation across other iconic ranges, without ever compromising the elegance of our packaging. Each additional bottle is a concrete step towards our goal of eliminating virgin plastic and building a high-performing circular economy for our packaging," L’Occitane en Provence Packaging R&D Director David Bayard said in a statement.
