Vintage never goes out of style, and it seems the latest way for a woman to make a fashion statement is with silver grey hair.

Social media users all over the world have been showing off pictures of their steely locks via the hashtag #grannyhair, in a trend kickstarted by starlets such as Kelly Osbourne, known for her purple rinse, and Rihanna. A few generations up, stars like Dame Judi Dench and Jamie Lee Curtis have long been proving that it isn’t just men who can play at being silver foxes.

The movement has come out in force on Twitter and on Instagram, with young and old alike going for grey.

Although the trend has obvious advantages for those with naturally gray locks, it is possible to dye your hair to achieve the look. However, in that case, the process requires serious bleaching.

In order to protect the shade, cosmetics manufacturers have developed dedicated ranges. "L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Silver Shampoo for Grey or White Hair", for instance, is designed to combat yellow tones, as is the popular Clairol "Professional Shimmer Lights Conditioner". The "Twice A Week Brightening Shampoo" by Provoke is designed to have a similar effect, and the brand also offers a special dry shampoo for silver hair.
