Made from maca, a small plant known for its invigorating properties that grows on the Andean plateaus, Macaline combines three effects: it slims by shedding fat and limiting fibrosis in the fat cells; reduces puffiness by strengthening the blood vessels’ structure and improving microcirculation; and firms the skin by restoring the dermal matrix.

Macaline is an eco-designed active ingredient derived from from maca, a small plant known for its invigorating properties that grows on the Andean plateaus.

Clinical trials have been conducted on 33 women of normal BMI (Body Mass Index) to prove the active’s efficacy. “After the subjects used a cream formulated with Macaline for 56 days, we observed a 31 cm3 reduction in thigh circumference, a 44% increase in temperature consistency compared to the placebo, and firmer skin tissue,” says Armelle Le Peniec, Director of Cosmetic Active Ingredients at Laboratoires Expanscience.

Environmentally friendly

Furthermore, Macaline is an eco-designed active ingredient. To produce it, Laboratoires Expanscience decided to give priority to endemic species by exclusively using maca leaves from the plant’s area of origin - Latin America. As a result, Expanscience sources maca leaves from Peru and encourages respect for traditional farming practices: the land is cultivated for two years then left fallow for the next ten. It also helps producers with their economic and social development in conjunction with its local partner.

The maca supply chain is overseen by the commitment standards of Laboratoires Expanscience’s “Responsible plant supply chains.” As part of this and our other supply chains, Expanscience’s sourcing practices are subject to evaluation by the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), of which Expanscience has been a member since 2011.

A larger offering

With the launch of Macaline, Expanscience has rounded out its line of cosmetic active ingredients with a product devoted to body care. “After developing the segment of active ingredients for the face, we wanted to revitalize the body and hair care segments,” says Armelle Le Peniec.

Launched in France during the Cosmetagora exhibition, Macaline has already attracted a number of customers, according to the company. “To help customers make plans for this active ingredient, we also developed a ready-to-use formula made with Macaline that is designed to inspire their creativity," adds Armelle Le Peniec.
