An exceptional distinction calls for an exceptional celebration! Ten years after its last induction of Master Perfumers in Fine Fragrance, dsm-firmenich welcomed Marie Salamagne and Frank Voelkl into this exclusive circle during a ceremony held beneath the vaulted ceilings of Paris’s Petit Palais on September 23.

Created by Firmenich in 1969 with the elevation of Arturo Jordi-Pey, the Master Perfumer distinction remains one of the rarest honors in the fragrance industry. Marie Salamagne and Frank Voelkl become the 15th and 16th creators in the house’s history to receive the title. They join Alberto Morillas, Olivier Cresp, Honorine Blanc, and Nathalie Lorson among dsm-firmenich’s current Master Perfumers in Fine Fragrance.

Beyond commercial success, the distinction is primarily intended to recognize a perfumer’s creative vision and capacity for innovation, according to Emmanuel Butstraen, President Perfumery & Beauty at dsm-firmenich. "Behind every fragrance launched lie hundreds of briefs, most of which never come to fruition. In the perfumer’s profession, perseverance counts just as much as talent," he says.

At dsm-firmenich, a Master Perfumer serves as both a guardian of olfactory excellence and an expert in the house’s ingredient palette, while also driving innovation and mentoring the next generation of perfumers.

Marie Salamagne is the creator of fragrances such as Black Opium and Muse (Yves Saint Laurent), Beach Walk and By the Fireplace (Maison Margiela), Fame (Rabanne), I Want Choo Le Parfum (Jimmy Choo), and Paradigme (Prada). Frank Voelkl is the nose behind creations such as Santal 33 (Le Labo), Gucci Bamboo (Gucci), Tuscan Leather Intense (Tom Ford), You Doux (Glossier), as well as fragrances for Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and Dwayne Johnson.

The Nuit des Maîtres also gave dsm-firmenich an opportunity to turn its attention to the future, announcing the appointment of three emerging perfumers from its in-house perfumery school: Abdulkader Fattouh, Olivia Hartnell, and Florian Pellegrin.

At the Petit Palais ceremony, the group successfully celebrated two remarkable careers while shining a spotlight on a new generation poised to shape perfumery’s next chapter.
