The alcohol-free fragrance segment has grown in recent years, attracting customers looking for a new fragrance experience. This context has accelerated the emergence of technologies that improve the sensory promise and effectiveness of alcohol-free fragrances. With Aroma Hydro, CPL avoids alcohol substitutes such as glycols or nano-emulsions.
An innovative and versatile technology
Aroma Hydro fully aligns with this innovation-driven momentum while opening up a new technological pathway. The breakthrough lies in replacing conventional solvents with a water-based finished product. In practical terms, CPL Aromas supplies customers with a fragrance concentrate developed using a proprietary technique — patent pending —requiring only the addition of water. The result is an alcohol-free fragrance with “a finer texture, faster drying time, and enhanced benefits for both skin and environment,” explains Cécile Le Cerf, Managing Director France.
CPL Aromas asserts that Aroma Hydro delivers strength and longevity on par with alcohol-based perfumes, while fully preserving the fragrance’s hedonistic appeal and olfactory architecture. “The fragrance remains complex and evolving, from top notes to base notes, thanks to our unique formulation method—and the results have truly impressed our customers,” the executive adds.
Aroma Hydro thus offers a credible alternative to alcohol-based fragrances for consumers looking for a product that is more respectful of the skin or the environment, without sacrificing the power or sensory pleasure of a fragrance. “With this in mind, this innovation could eventually replace alcohol-based perfumes,” says Cécile Le Cerf.
The technology also introduces a new way of wearing fragrance, through a hybrid format that bridges perfumery with skin and hair care. “This solution is particularly suited to on-trend hair mists and all-over formulas. The absence of alcohol allows for the inclusion of ingredients that deliver genuine skin care benefits, enabling the creation of versatile, multi-purpose scented products,” continues Le Cerf.
Another key advantage is the strong interest Aroma Hydro is generating in the Middle East, where alcohol use is restricted. While these markets already embrace alternative fragrance rituals such as oils and bakhour, Aroma Hydro provides a true alcohol-free perfume format. “Our technology was very well received at the Beautyworld Middle East trade show in Dubai at the end of October,” highlights Le Cerf.
Responding to a sustainable market vision
From an ecological standpoint, Aroma Hydro is part of a more responsible formulation approach. "Replacing alcohol and conventional solvents reduces our dependence on petrochemical ingredients. This technology also makes it possible to achieve high olfactory performance without resorting to high concentrations, thanks to impactful bases, thus limiting the use of certain chemicals," explains Cécile Le Cerf.
The perfume market remains on a strong growth trajectory, fueled by bold, signature, and innovative fragrances. “Consumers are no longer willing to compromise on performance or pleasure. As expectations rise, brands are multiplying claims — vegan, ethical, sulfate-free, or alcohol-free. Eco-friendly positioning and formulas with a higher proportion of natural ingredients are increasingly perceived as markers of quality. Consumers are now seeking products that are beneficial for both their skin and the environment,” she continues.
It is within this evolving market landscape that CPL Aromas is investing in technologies that meet growing demands for performance, sensoriality, and responsibility, while creating new usage opportunities for brands, exemplified by Aroma Hydro.
The family-owned and independent company places innovation at the heart of its strategy. “Our management is based on a long-term vision of perfumery, so investing in the future is essential,” emphasizes Cécile Le Cerf. This approach is in line with CPL Aromas’ eco-responsible commitments, as exemplified by technologies such as Ecoboost, biodegradable capsules, in-house captives, and AromaSpaces.
Alongside technological innovation, the group is also focused on reinforcing its creative capabilities. “Our perfumers are supported by a wide-ranging palette and unique technologies, empowering them to pursue more responsible perfumery while maintaining high standards of creativity and performance,” concludes Cécile Le Cerf.
