François Luscan, President and CEO, Albéa

After the green light from the European Commission in late October 2012, the clearance from Chinese authorities was the only piece missing, both Albéa and Rexam running significant businesses in this country. This was done a few days ago and the acquisition of the cosmetics division of Rexam Personal Care by Albéa is now finalized.

Global leader

With this new acquisition, the affiliate of Sun European Partners LLP confirms its global leadership in cosmetics and personal care by expanding its packaging solutions to dispensing systems and reinforcing its offer in lipstick tubes, cosmetic rigid packaging, and beauty solutions. It also strengthens Albéa’s position in emerging markets to develop its wide product portfolio across multiple market segments.

This acquisition is consistent with Albéa’s strategy of building a strong, sustainable and profitable growth platform offering packaging solutions to the Cosmetics and Personal Care market,” said François Luscan, President and CEO, Albéa.

In the wake of the acquisition of the Betts group in 2011 (a global annual production of 2 billion tubes every year), then the purchase of China-based company Tex (20 million US dollars in sales, 700 staff and 3 plants), Albéa confirms what François Luscan told the readers of Premium Beauty News 18 months ago: “Albéa is now in a position to grow strongly again, in all segments of its portfolio, and particularly in the beauty sector.” It’s a deal!

Rexam’s pumps asset

In a recent analysis, Moody’s deemed the combined company would de facto hold the second largest market share in the fragrance pumps category and the third largest market share in the cosmetic pumps category. Also note the group becomes the world’s leading manufacturer of lipstick tubes, mascara bottles and makeup cases. The company is also among the market leaders in lipstick packaging, fragrance pumps, lotion pumps and cosmetic closures.

Regarding the international coverage, Albéa acquires Rexam’s industrial facilities on three continents, including in high-growth markets in Asia and Brazil, and also a base of very prestigious clients and a broad portfolio of products.

46 sites in 14 countries!

With the integration of the cosmetics division of Rexam Personal Care - no less than 11 facilities in Europe, the Americas and Asia, not exactely a small piece! - Albéa now operates 46 plants in 14 countries.

While Albéa considers that the activities of the two groups are highly complementary, it is nevertheless difficult to figure out this acquisition could be achieved without reorganising of some obvious overlaps. When, where and how? To be continued…

Anyway, François Luscan has already achieved the goal he had set 18 months ago: “To have a top-level industrial tool!
