By the REACH deadline of 30 November 2010, 24,675 registration dossiers have been successfully submitted for 4,300 substances, announced ECHA, the European Chemicals Agency. “The number of registrations is in line with the original Commission estimate, which was the basis of the revenue estimate for the agency, so that financing of the activities of the agency in the coming years is safeguarded,” ECHA added.

Substances manufactured or imported in the European Union in quantities exceeding 1000 tones per year, as well as substances of concern [1], had to be registered under Europe’s chemicals legislation before the 1st of December 2010.

Approximately 86 percent of registrations were made by large companies and 14 percent by small or medium-sized companies. Only Representatives (companies representing non-EU manufacturers) made 19 percent of registrations. Reflecting the European chemicals market, most of the registrations came from companies based in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, France and Belgium. [2]

Manufacturers and importers must now notify the classification and labelling of their substances to ECHA by 3 January 2011 (if they have not already done so in their registration dossier).

The next REACH deadlines are in 2013 and 2018:

 31 May 2013 for substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 tonnes or more per year per manufacturer in the Community or per importer at least once after 1 June 2007;

 31 May 2018 for substances manufactured in the Community or imported in quantities of 1 tonne or more per year per manufacturer or per importer at least once after 1 June 2007.
