A strong industrial tool

It has been nearly 2 years now that Farevacolor, Fareva’s business unit specialized in production of makeup, left the nest. A logical step in the development of the Fareva group explains Laurent Dodet, its Vice-President: "We were already very active in the cosmetic industry, in a broad sense with not less than eleven production plants in France at Tournon (aerosols, aerosols with a pouch, bottles, perfumery, toilet waters, eaux de cologne), Neuvic sur l’Isle and Bergerac (aerosols, tubes, sticks, rolls-on, jars, bottles), Quetigny, St Quentin Fallavier and Gemenos (hygiene products in bottles, sachets, wet wipes), Nontron-en-Périgord (effervescent bath products in the form of tablets, beads, crystals, pebbles...), Bernay (hygiene products in bottles, perfumery, aerosols), Savigny-le-Temple (personal care products in tubes and bottles, and for make-up, lipsticks, compact powders, foundations, mascaras, gloss, nail polishes). Follow our factories overseas: in Saint Petersburg (hygiene products in bottles, rolls-on), in Turquey (hygiene products in bottles, aerosols, aerosols with a pouch), in Wales (hygiene products in bottles, personal care products in tubes, bottles and jars) and in Ukraine at Uzhgorod (bottles, aerosols, tubes, jars. Perfumery, toilet waters, eaux de cologne)".

This industrial tool helps Fareva group display for this year EUR 300 million in turnover in the cosmetic segment, for a global turnover of EUR 750 million achieved by the group if all the other activities in the pharmaceutical, household products and industrial sectors are included..

On the site of Tournon, this month, Fareva is inaugurating a brand new laboratory with a staff of 3, fully dedicated to the development of natural and organic cosmetic products.

A source of proposals

"Formulating..., producing..., filling..., has always been our vocation, underlines Laurent Dodet, and we have always taken the necessary steps to serve the best way we could our customer markets. With Farevacolor, we have added yet more strings to our bow as we offer to begin from a brief or even sometimes from a blank page to design the product from A to Z, from the marketing concept to the development and final delivery of products. We must constantly be a source of proposals".

According to Fareva’s Vice President, the face of the beauty industry has changed dramatically over the past five years. "Total outsourcing has made its way in all minds and we were able to adapt. But it is a mistake to think you can simply improvise on the Full Service market. Quality and service must be faultless. We are not entitled to make mistakes. This is one of the reasons why we invest a lot in research & development (50 employees in R&D at Savigny le Temple) and certification. Regarding the later subject, I must point out that two of our sites will be certified by the FDA later this year".

A point of view that probably gives an answer to the question whether Full Service is synonymous with offshoring in low costs countries, Laurent Dodet answers clearly: "No. If we were to produce in the future in more distant countries, we would do this without having to relocate".

The Farevacolor unit is composed of 42 people and will achieve a turnover of about EUR 36 million in 2009.

"The Cosmoprof show, April last, was a chance for us to present more than 20 formulations and collections created by our Makeup Artist, Ice and Illusion. The work of our R & D laboratory is paying off in terms of prospective. We have showcased real product innovations on the Lips, Eyes and Complexion segment. These innovations where very much appreciated by customers, several of them were requested for an application of exclusivity. Products originating from these innovations are to be launched in 2010 and 2011 but I can’t say more as these projects are confidential," confides Laurent Dodet.

After a range of sun makeup unveiled in June, the Fareva team will organize a home presentation of new products. To be continued...
