When you’re a packaging designer, you know that everything you design can have repercussions for the environment. We need to think of the next generation,” says Cyril Drouet, Metsä Board’s design & innovation director.

As part of these efforts the company recently presented an innovative paperboard cup design concept called ‘Lidloc’. The patented design is based upon an extension to a standard cup structure that folds and locks into an integrated lid. This innovative design completely removes the need for a separate plastic lid and aims to re-invent how paperboard cups are produced, consumed and recycled.

European Carton Excellence Awards

Most recently, Metsä Board’s paperboards were used by winners in three categories at the 2017 European Carton Excellence Awards: Food & Beverages, Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals and the Public Award. The Award Gala was held on 21 September in Salzburg, Austria.

The jury of this competition looked for excellence in design, convenience, brand communication and the major role paperboard plays as an innovative packaging material. In total Metsä Board paperboard featured in eight of the finalist packages of which two were awarded.

We are delighted that our products have been an integral part of the winning packages. This demonstrates the important part that the packaging plays in creating maximum shelf-impact and can help differentiate a brand from the competition. Sustainability too should be an integral part of the packaging design, so that the packaging is not only made of sustainable materials but it is also lightweight, right-sized, functional and easy to recycle; our products also helped achieve these goals”, states Mika Paljakka, VP Sales EMEA, Metsä Board.
