Valérie Jacob, SGD

The Espace Matières (Materials and textures area) at MakeUp in Paris, reminiscent of an art gallery, was a tribute to cosmetic material: stunning visuals of make up faces by Damien Dufresne, the Artistic Director, "... like words on skin" mingling harmoniously with amazing sculptures, "... like countless moments of intimacy when the body meets with matter"... enhanced with glass bottles, in turn transparent, iridescent, delicately tinted or fully opaque. An area which was made possible thanks to the commitment of three companies G. Pivaudran, Solev and, ... SGD Parfumerie/Cosmétiques. An opportunity for Valérie Jacob, SGD’s Marketing Director to recall for Premium Beauty News the importance that the skincare segment and more specifically, the make-up segment mean for her Group.

Premium Beauty News - Surprisingly the glass industry seems to express itself much more in the fragrance segment than in the one of cosmetics and much less in the make-up segment. But figures show that cosmetic products account for more than 30% of sales in this packaging segment and that make-up, mainly through foundation products, is one of its dynamic vector.

Valérie Jacob - Yes, you are right! The world of perfume is undoubtedly the one where our know-how in terms of glass making expresses itself the most flamboyantly. The world of cosmetics is more in connection with jars and bottles, which were often, up to now originating from our collection of standard items. But nowadays, codes for high-end skincare and make-up products are changing. There is currently a new trend highlighting the development, and a return in some cases to more sophisticated and creative glass containers.

Premium Beauty News - What are the advantages of glass for skincare and make-up products?

Valérie Jacob - There are numerous! First of all, glass is a neutral material, which therefore has no compatibility problem with formulas, and which in addition has a barrier effect protecting even the most sensitive of them. The weight, the brightness of glass, its multiple decorative options make it inevitably a "premium" image vector for skincare and make-up products.

And of course, let’s not forget a major ecological advantage: glass is 100% recyclable!

Significant strong points to which SGD is giving value to. Taking advantage of our expertise in the pharmaceutical industry, we are reflecting on innovations for "intelligent packagings" in order to bring real functional benefits, to the foundation segment, for example. Remember that 60% of references are packed in glass. Moreover, the "Fusion Beauty" trend which gave rise to make-up products enriched with active ingredients or to formulas that change colour or texture when applied on the skin, enhances the use of glass containers. It seems worthwhile to reflect on the development of appropriate bottles!

Premium Beauty News - A market watch and innovation approach that is always at the heart of SGD’s strategy?

Valérie Jacob - Absolutely! This is an integral part of the strategic marketing unit whose daily work is to deepen its knowledge of markets, to provide insight and enable the Group to project itself into the future. All this, of course, within the overall framework which characterizes SGD as we operate commercially and industrially in all parts of the world, Asia, North America and South America, and, of course, Europe. We are strongly market- and consumer-oriented, to provide optimal solutions to our clients.

Premium Beauty News - Finally, does your desire to take part to the MakeUp In Paris show, an unusual move for a glassmaker, come from your observation that the assets of glass are still too little known in the world of make-up?

Valérie Jacob - Yes for sure! Especially since the advantages of glass are not limited the material itself, but also extend to the decoration techniques that make it possible to obtain very peculiar touches, and unique colours and finishes. With our expertise and the beauty of the material itself, we offer brands opportunities to unleash their imagination to create bottles and jars representing a true visual and sensory experience for consumers, while highlighting colours, light, textures.

At SGD, we give clients the freedom to enjoy a new vision of glass, to animate the worlds of make-up and skincare.
